SCIENCE FAIR JUDGES NEEDED:
Preparations are underway for one of Key's favorite events – the Science Fair and Key School Family Science Night! Mark your calendar for Friday, March 2nd! Students' projects will be judged during the school day, and we would love to hear from any parents in, or with access to, the wide world of science who might be able to help recruit a judge for the day. All scientific fields welcome! They are sure to have a wonderful time interacting with our budding young scientists and observing all their hard work. Contact: Tricia Duncan at triduncan@verizon.net
KEY SCIENCE FAIR
Introduction:
The Key School Science Fair and Night is a wonderful tradition that allows students to engage in critical thinking over a long period of time. Students in grades 3-5 are required to participate, while students in PK-2 have the option to participate if they would like (and many of them do!). This year, the Science Fair and Night is on Friday March 2, 2012. The Fair will take place during the day, while the Science Night is in the evening in our cafeteria and gymnasium. Click here to download the Science Fair packet, which includes a proposal form that students can print out if they have lost theirs plus some general topic ideas.

FILLMORE NEWS:
The first semester is drawing to a close, and there are several upcoming dates to put on your calendars. Next week students in grades 3-5 will choose new classes for the second semester. Students will bring a copy of their choice form home for parents to review prior to class assignments. The new semester starts on Monday, January 30. On January 20 at 3 pm, we will celebrate our "Journeys" theme with a performance in the auditorium featuring different dance, drama and music classes from all of the Fillmore schools. Participating students and families will be getting individual letters with details about the day. During the last class of the first semester, January 23-27, at 1:30 p.m. each afternoon, afternoon students will share a song, dance or theater game on the stage for their classmates and any parents or friends who can attend.

TRASH-FREE LUNCH WEDNESDAYS:
Did you know that the typical American student generates 67 pounds of discarded school lunch packaging waste per school year? That's more than 18,000 pounds yearly for the average-sized elementary school! Key is committed to reducing our footprint on the earth, so every Wednesday is "trash-free lunch day" for those who bring their lunch to school. These tips will make it so easy that we hope you'll make everyday a trash-free day!
Avoid packaging by using reusable drink containers (e.g., Kleen Kanteen) and stainless steel or BPA-free plastic lunch containers such as the "lunchbot" or a "lunch cube":

- Buy in bulk or bake your own cookies or granola bars instead of buying individually wrapped items.
- Spare em' the sandwich blues and and serve up hot lunches in thermoses (e.g., foogo).
- Jazz up the meal with cloth napkins and utensils; stage a family decorating contest to create cool napkins.
- Pictures speak louder than words, for a myriad of photos and ideas: http://lunchbots.com/gallery/

- Get your kids involved in the decision making! No matter their age, children can help you pack a healthy, packaging-free meal. This week's Washington Post article has some suggestions for making this happen: http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/how-to-pack-a-lunch-that-will-be-eaten/2011/08/25/gIQAMtVv6J_story.html?hpid=z12
