New Security Measures at Key.  We are implementing a new process for visitors to sign in and out in the main lobby. The process will increase security and efficiency in the building. Anyone who arrives after school has begun must sign-in at the security desk and pick up a visitor’s pass to wear any time they are in the building. If you are bringing your child to school late or dropping off a lunchbox, the security guard will take your child to class or the lunchbox to the room. If there is no one at the security desk, then check in at the office before going anywhere else in the building. Our goal is to minimize traffic/disruptions and ensure that we are aware of everyone in the building. We appreciate your cooperation and support in keeping our school safe. Thank you.

Spend a few minutes signing up at igive.com to support Key School!  Igive allows you to shop online as you usually do, but percentages of your purchases are contributed to a charity of your choice. Each month, with ONLY 14 users signed up, we are raising about $50 a month for Key from igive.com. Imagine if we could double or triple that! There are just a few simple steps to join:

  1. Go to www.igive.com and register yourself.
  2. Pick Key Elementary School as your cause.
  3. Download the "Shopping Window", which allows you to shop online at thousands of sites (including Land's End, Old Navy, Gap, Barnes & Nobles & much more) and a donation will automatically be made to Key. Downloading the shopping window is key because you needn't remember to register the purchase through igive--it happens automatically.

Thank you for your support!

The Foreign Language Exploratory Committee is please to report the results of the parent survey conducted last month.  Below is a summary.  For complete results go to http://www.keyschooldc.org/surveyresults.pdf.

Summary of Survey Results

  • Response rate was high -- 140 respondents out of 234 families
  • Support for a foreign language program was overwhelming
  • 69% respondents favor foreign language in the curriculum
  • 94% support an extracurricular program if unable to fit in present curriculum
  • Spanish was 1st language choice of vast majority -- 71%
  • (21% selected French as 1st choice and 17% selected Mandarin Chinese as 1st choice)

Recommendations:  Based on high level of support, Key will offer a Pilot Extracurricular Foreign Language Program through the Montgomery County FLES Program.  Following is an outline:

  • We will start with two Introductory Spanish classes for K and 1st graders
  • Classes will begin the week after Spring Break
  • Each class will meet twice a week, for 10 weeks
  • One class will begin 1 hour before school (45 min. instruction, 15 min. transition time)
  • One class will begin immediately after school and run 1 hour (15 min. snack time, 45 min. instruction)
  • Tuition will be approximately $250 per student
  • Maximum enrollment for each class is fifteen students.  Therefore, we may need to use a lottery depending on number of students wishing to enroll.

Enrollment forms will go home with K and 1st graders by mid-March.

A Morning Snow Brigade in the Making - A new initiative is underway.  Let us help ourselves navigate the steps and doorways at Key School on mornings when a nighttime snow has accumulated on school surfaces but not caused a school closing.  We are calling upon parents to sign up to be early morning shovelers of steps and doorways.  Here’s how you can help.  Please send your name and email address to Greg Mize at gemproductions at mac.com before February 1st.  Greg will then create a listserv whereby he will send night-before or day-of-school notice to list members to show up with shovels in hand at 7 a.m. to give just 20 minutes of shoveling labor.  Please commit to this simple way to give our limited custodial staff more ability to help our students and parents arrive at school safely.

Drop-off Etiquette – it’s time for a reminder!  We regularly hear from horrified parents who’ve observed some risky, inconsiderate drop-off habits.  Please remember to obey all traffic laws and school safety rules when dropping off your precious ones in the morning.  Of particular note:

  • When dropping off your children by car, the following school traffic pattern should be used: drive north along Hurst Terrace, turn right and head east on Garfield Street, turn right and continue south on Eskridge Terrace, and then turn right and head west on Dana Place. This assures a flow of traffic in one direction on a street that cannot adequately handle busy two-way traffic.
  • Parents may not use the staff parking lot or driveway for any reason.  This includes turning around, dropping off, or parking.
  • Do not pull over to the wrong side of the street to drop off a child.
  • Do not attempt illegal 3-point turns in a street intersection.

Remember, your neighbors are watching!
